When I first met my husband, he was wearing wrestling shoes. My first roommate in college also wore them, though I was pretty sure neither of them had ever wrestled a day in their life. This was a long time ago though, and back then it must have been some sort of trend to wear them. Today, most people you see wearing these are people who actually need them. Most of these people will be boys who are on the school wrestling team, and college students who do the same.
If you have ever wrestled around with friends, you may realize why wrestling shoes are so important for those who are in the sport. For the most part, they have a softer sole that allows more foot control. On a wrestling matt, every bit of traction you can get is needed, and wrestling shoes afford that extra help. I would think that they are also pretty comfortable. The soft sole, however, wouldn’t be good for walking in normal places, so perhaps it’s good that wearing them for fashion was short lived as far as trends go.

We do not need to be shoemakers to know if our shoes fit, and just as little have we any need to be professionals to acquire knowledge of matters of universal interest.

There is something comfortable about wrestling shoes though, and I can understand why some enjoyed wearing them for a while. I slipped my roommates on to go to the store and they were wonderful on my feet. However, by the time I got home I did notice that the bottom of my left foot hurt, and I suspect it was the shoes. They may not offer great support, but wrestlers don’t really need wear them for support or comfort, but rather to do better in their sport. Because they only wear the shoes for practice and for matches, they have a tendency to last a long time, but should be cared for on top of that.
Quite often, schools that require students to buy wrestling shoes will give parents an idea of where to buy them, or may just hand them an order form. Sometimes everyone ordering their wrestling shoes from one place will get a discount, and some give discounts to school programs anyway. If not, you can find quality shoes for this purpose in any sports store, and they come in a few great colors that most schools will approve of for their team. If you aren’t sure about the colors, ask the coach or even think about the school colors. The child will probably already know.
