Most women go into their wedding knowing a lot about what they want from it. Well before the planning starts, most of them have imagined what their wedding dress will look like, what the bridesmaids will be wearing, what the setting is like, and even what the food will be like. Some of them have even incorporated music into the fantasy from the beginning of adolescence. Nonetheless, there is one area that seems to be often neglected by most women. Believe it or not, many of them never think about bridal shoes until the planning starts.
As a wedding planner, I have seen different people put in different approaches to having the perfect wedding. Some people like to make it very formal and traditional. They will wear elaborate, fancy dresses, high heeled bridal shoes, and a veil. Their bridesmaids will also be dressed in some of the most fancy and beautiful clothing they can find. With other people, however, it is just the opposite. They will put on simple bridal flip flops, or even wear tennis shoes. These casual brides know that they are going to be on their feet all day entertaining people at the wedding, so they put comfort at a premium. Wherever you fit in on the continuum, however, there are going to be perfect bridal shoes for you.

Personally, I think that the most important characteristic of bridal shoes is that they match what the bride is wearing. A bride who wears a very fancy, formal wedding dress should wear very fancy, formal shoes. A bride in a more modern, informal dress can get away with modern, informal shoes. Of course, this isn't the only way of thinking about it. A lot of people take advantage of the fact that a traditional wedding dress mostly hides the feet. They buy casual shoes to wear under their wedding dresses, and no one is any the wiser! Once they change out of their wedding dresses, of course, they have to put on nicer shoes. Until then, they get to feel comfortable in their footwear.
A lot of shoe stores and wedding planners will tell you that there is one kind of bridal shoe that is more traditional than others, but this is nonsense. Although there are some shoes designed to look nice with wedding dresses, any footwear that looks good and matches the dress will work. Don't feel like you can't use your high heel shoes just because they aren't called “bridal”.
