Funky Hair Color

I grew up in a small, conservative town, so I never really saw funky hair color until I went to college. I had one roommate who had very dark brown hair, but managed to get blue and pink into her hairdo. She had used bleach to bleach the ends of her hair, and then had dipped them in the Manic Panic color. The look was certainly new for me, but I soon found that at my college it was very common.

I guess when you go to an art school you can expect to meet people of all types. I have always had a very open mind, so I was as not surprised as some of my more conservative friends when we noticed that almost half of the student body had some sort of funky hair color. It became so common that it was hardly worth a second glance. Many people who have a funky hair color do so for the attention. They may say that they are trying to express themselves, but in reality they like to see the reactions of others.

 Bit of History
These women behind the store windows? Dreams, sir, dreams at bargain prices, a trip to the Indies! These people perfume themselves with spices. You enter, they close the curtains, and the trip begins. The gods descend on the nude bodies and the islands drift, demented, with the tousled hair of palm trees in the breeze.
—Albert Camus (1913–1960)

Although I am all for personal expression and doing whatever you want with your life, I do not like hypocrites. I found that some of the people with funky hair color were indeed hypocrites. One guy in particular had a six inch tall mohawk that was usually purple or blue. Though he was a nice guy for the most part, it bothered me when he complained that people were staring at him. Not only did he have a funky hair color and a mohawk, he also had at least thirteen piercings in his face. I could not for the life of me figure out why he was surprised that people were staring at him. What else did he expect them to do?

Though having a funky hair color is not as shocking as it used to be, there are some cases when it is not a good idea. You probably already know if this would be something that would be acceptable for your job or not. If you do not have a job that will allow you to have a funky hair color, you can usually find something temporary that will last only a day or two. If you use that, you can go around with a funky hair color on the weekends, while remaining presentable for work during the week. It’s wonderful to express yourself, but it isn’t worth losing your job over.
