Although I have long known that I belonged in fashion design and merchandising, it took me a long time to realize where I really fit into the continuum. At first, I thought that fashion design colleges were the way for me to go. I had been making clothes since I was very young, you see, and I was reasonably good at it. Nonetheless, my fashion design college experience was mixed at best. Although I'd got decent grades, I never felt all that inspired. My works fit very well into the latest trend, but they didn't have much originality of their own. In a field that likes to consider itself artistic, I was more of a craftsman. I can make solid, well put together ensembles, but I couldn't invent anything new. That is why it is decided to enroll in fashion merchandising colleges.

Going to a fashion merchandising college was not easy for me. You see, all along I have had dreams of being an artist. I knew that I was getting involved in a very commercial art form, but nevertheless, it seemed like art all the same. Going to fashion marketing college changed my mind. It shattered my illusions very quickly. You see, although fashion merchandising colleges do allow for some self expression, that is certainly not the emphasis. The emphasis with a fashion merchandising college degree is to be able to spot a trend in capitalize on it. Although originality helps with this, it is really not important except in small doses. What is much more crucial is a sense of which way the herd is heading. Fashion merchandising colleges teach you how to make money off fashion, not how to make beautiful clothes.

 Bit of History
Lord, I fashion dark gods, too,
Daring even to give You
Dark despairing features
—Countee Cullen (1903–1946)

Nonetheless, I am pretty happy with my fashion merchandising college education. On most days, I am actually really excited to go in to work. Before enrolling in fashion merchandising colleges, that was not the case. I would dread getting up for work on Monday, and spend the whole week looking forward to Friday night. Fashion merchandising colleges have changed this by giving me a career where I can put a lot of myself into what I do. Although there is a lot of tedious work in fashion marketing and design, there is also a lot of room for inspiration. It is that that keeps me going, day in and day out, 15 years after I got my degree.

Teen Fashion
